Variety is reporting this evening that Angela Bassett has joined the cast of Green Lantern, which is currently in production in New Orleans. She’s been cast as Dr. Amanda Waller, a character that has popped in and out of various DC Comics properties over the years. Waller is a former government aid who would eventually go on to lead the Suicide Squad, a group of supervillains working on behalf of the government.
There’s no word on what role Waller will play in this origin story of Hal Jordon (Ryan Reynolds), but the government does play a major role in the story, as Jordan is a test pilot for Ferris Aircraft, a weapons manufacturing company run by Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), his long-time friend and general love interest. Waller may also have some ties to Senator Hammond (Tim Robbins), the father of Dr. Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard), one of the film’s main villains. This is all speculation of course, as I don’t claim to have read the script or anything… I’m just excited and I like hypotheticals.
Green Lantern is due in theaters June 17, 2011.
