Pineapple Express hottie Amber Heard has no trouble with being nude on screen. I know this to be fact because while at Sundance I had the opportunity to screen a film called The Informers, in which Ms. Heard’s nude — and quite attractive — body was present and unmasked for all but about 5% of her time on screen. And it was good. In fact, it was the one highlight in an otherwise worthless film experience.

I tell you that story to tell you this one — The Hollywood Reporter dropped upon us today the news that Heard is now in the running to star alongside Johnny Depp in The Rum Diary, an adaptation of a novel by Hunter S. Thompson. According to THR’s Bory Kit, the role would place her “at the front and center of a love triangle in the tale of a washed-up, hard-drinking journalist named Paul Kemp (Depp) in 1950s Puerto Rico. Heard will play Chenault, the free-spirited girlfriend of a fellow journalist who cheats on him with Kemp, trying to convince him to run away with her.”

For those not familiar with Ms. Heard’s body of work, she has previously starred in the title role of director Jonathan Levine’s (The Wackness) high school thriller All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, as well as a supporting role as Seth Rogen’s teenage girlfriend in Pineapple Express.

The project originally drew interest from some of Hollywood’s top blondes, including Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley, though some were said to have serious reservations about the amount of nudity called for in a role. Which leads me to believe that there is something wrong with both Ms. Johansson and Ms. Knightley. You mean to tell me they they weren’t willing to show some extra skin for the opportunity to star in a film based on a H.S. Thompson novel, alongside Johnny Depp (who I’m told is an attractive fellow)? I’m not into all of that “stars aligning” and “destiny” mumbo-jumbo, but to me this does seem like a near-perfect opportunity for one of these leading ladies to break into something different. For Knightley, it would mean something that doesn’t take place in the dark ages. And for Johansson, it would mean something that would be the least bit bearable.

Alas, I am perfectly fine with Amber Heard taking the role. She’s not a terrible actress, she could use a break and hell, she looks great without her clothes on. This does lead me to a question for the class though. Given the two images below (Heard on the right, Johansson on the left), which would you rather see in the nude?
