It’s less about the collective psyche of Americans, and more about studios coming to terms with the fact that we’re mostly not idiots who can’t read good and want to learn to do other things good, too. The main lesson is that if you make a subtitled movie, and it makes a billion dollars, studios stop caring about subtitles all that much.
