DVD’s I Bought This Week: March 3rd

DVDs I Bought This Week!

A wise man once said “It’s not just about seeing Star Wars two weeks before everyone else. You’ve gotta plow through crap like Marie Antoinette and Catwoman as well.” I have the fortune of being able to see all of the films that I want, and find out that they are only worth one viewing (or less) before I would willingly pay for the DVD…and subsequently end up hating myself later. But for every The Whoopee Boys there has to be an Indiana Jones, and because of the great films I am able to put myself further in debt every week.

The Pitch: It’s that country that New Zealand wants to be…just kidding.

Why Buy It?: Say what you will about me, but I just really enjoy Baz Luhrmann productions. I have never been a big fan of musicals but when these new films can grow past the traditional mold, I am all in. Australia may have been a big bust at the box office, but the film is pretty awesome. The imagery is spectacular, and the film is entertaining to say the least. I can’t wait to pop this in on Blu-ray.

Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic

The Pitch: Watchmen with no effort

Why Buy It?: Sure I already have all these from iTunes, but as many of you already know…I have OCD and I will buy things repeatedly for the sake of presentation. For instance, I just like the fact that I can own a hard copy of these motion comics…and own then in high definition. There is a slight downside to these that some people may find to be distracting. The voice actor is spectacular, but I have already heard people complain about him doing the female voices as well. Take it easy, not everything can be perfect.

Dead in 3 Days

The Pitch: The case of the texting killer.

Why Rent It?: I will always give original horror films a chance. Usually foreign films are more original than domestic films, so they get a bit more of an open mind from me. This one sounds a bit like Pulse to me, a killer tipping off his victims via text. However, there is already a sequel out (due to this film being a couple years old already) so it must be worth seeing.

Wonder Woman

The Pitch: Straight to DVD animated super hero-ness.

Why Rent It?: What is not to like about this if you are a fanboy? These animated straight to DVD movies have been way above expectactions for most people. Marvel and DC both have been pretty awesome about the quality of these films. I myself have never been a big fan of Wonder Woman, so I won’t be buying it. I will check it out though.

In the Electric Mist

Synopsis: Sounds like a Jim Morrison poem title…but it’s apparently a movie.

Why Avoid It?: Have you seen the cast on this straight to DVD mess? The movie stars Tommy Lee Jones, John Goodman, Peter Sarsgaard, Ned Beatty and Kelly Macdonald. It is directed by Bertrand Tavernier, and he is a pretty competent director. So how did this movie come to be? My guess – Tommy Lee Jones and Kelly Macdonald got drunk at a wrap up party for No Country For Old Men and accidentally wandered onto the set of this film while looking for their trailers.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua

The Pitch: The most blatant misuse of CGI since Space Jam.

Why Avoid It?: I know this is a movie made for children, but I couldn’t help but shudder every time I saw the trailer. I just don’t understand the point of this. I also don’t understand why chihuahuas are apparently Hispanic. This movie is just nonsensical to me. They need to make a movie about ninja simaese cats who steal diamonds. If anyone reads that and wants to make it happen, let me know.

Ace Ventura Jr.: Pet Detective

The Pitch: I don’t know what to say about this one.

Why Avoid It?: I remember when Ace Ventura came out, being an 11 year old kid…and doing my own impersonations of Jim Carrey. I thought I was the best Ace Ventura impersonator ever. Now who the hell thought it would be a good idea to dress a kid up, and make him do an Ace Ventura impersonation. This is horrible. This just makes me want to give up on life. Nevermind, I will just go see Watchmen tonight.
