DVDs I Bought This Week!

A wise man once said “It’s not just about seeing Star Wars two weeks before everyone else. You’ve gotta plow through crap like Marie Antoinette and Catwoman as well.” I have the fortune of being able to see all of the films that I want, and find out that they are only worth one viewing (or less) before I would willingly pay for the DVD…and subsequently end up hating myself later. But for every The Whoopee Boys there has to be an Indiana Jones, and because of the great films I am able to put myself further in debt every week.

Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter & Under the Hood

The Pitch: More Watchmen for you greedy fanboys.

Why Buy It?: Of course I joke when I call all of you greedy fanboys. Because I am, in fact, a greedy fanboy. I want all the Watchmen I can get. I have been psyched for this ever since Zach Snyder announced that Gerard Butler would be doing the voice work. So for those of you, like my friend, who keep saying “I just want more”…here you go. Here are some more supplements for the Watchmen film library. Now all we have to do is wait for the movie to come out on DVD. Sad faces all around.

Bolt

The Pitch: The best animated movie of the year?

Why Buy It?: I only pose that statement in the form of a question because it is one of the more controversial statements of the year. All anyone can talk about is Wall-E and Kung Fu Panda. Sure, I loved those two. I actually enjoyed Kung Fu Panda even more. Here is the odd thing though, I loved Bolt. I loved it so much that I may have actually loved it more than the other two. Funny things like that happen all the time with movies. You see something that you might not have any faith in, and it turns out to amaze you. I have to confess, Finding Nemo was that way with me. I was pretty underwhelmed with the trailers and commercials, only to be amazed with the film. Buy this one and enjoy.

The 400 Blows – Criterion Collection

The Pitch: A story of youth and innocence, shattered.

Why Buy It?: This one is a re-release for The Criterion Collection, but as a Blu-ray. Why Blu-ray for this one? That is always a tough question to field. However, I do have an important answer for film aficionados, videophiles and audiophiles. How about the strongest video restoration that this film will ever receive, and the fact that this is the first time you will ever hear an uncompressed presentation of the films original soundtrack? Mono tracks have traditionally been pretty muddy on DVD transfers, but not with this Blu-ray.

Quantum of Solace

The Pitch: A good fun film, not so much a Bond film though.

Why Rent It?: I await the hate…comment below but know this – this is not a Bond movie. This is Bond being Bourne. I know that the spy genre has taken a lot from the Bourne films these past few years, and to be fair…the genre took a lot from Bond for about four decades. That does not make it right for the best spy ever, to become a copycat. C’mon, Casino Royale was the epitome of Bond. He is barely ever in a clean suit in this one. Don’t expect a traditional Bond film, but I will agree that this is entertaining.

Andy Richter Controls the Universe

The Pitch: Andy Richter’s big break…don’t ask who Andy Richter is.

Why Rent It?: Sorry, but I like Andy Richter. It doesn’t matter that his show failed miserably…I still want to see the complete series. I won’t buy it though. Sorry Andy, I have to draw the line somewhere. Who knows, revisiting this one might make me want to throw down some cash for the set. Is it worth it?

In Treatment – Season 1

The Pitch: Psychotherapy with an audience.

Why Rent It?: I have to confess that I have never watched the show. I hear great things, and the concept is very original. HBO seldom fails…except for when Lisa Kudrow is involved. I will check out the first few shows, and yet again this might be another Rent that could eventually turn into a purchase. I am a sucker for peer pressure, so if you feel passionately for the show…just let me know where it counts.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars – A Galaxy Divided

Synopsis: Another Star Wars thing, that isn’t Fanboys.

Why Avoid It?: Seriously George, when the diehard fans aren’t even behind the franchises newest ventures…Stop! This is getting ridiculous. No one cares about this crap. Do you? The only thing Star Wars related that I have liked recently was Fanboys. How long have we been waiting for Fanboys? If George was smart, he would have bought his way into distribution and drove the cashcow to Skywalker Ranch. I get so angry sometimes, im sorry. I will go grab my snuggie.

Big Stan

The Pitch: Rob Schneider’s newest bowel movement

Why Rent It?: So even though Rob Schneider has been a consistent Hollywood performer, that doesn’t give him the right to keep on shoveling crap. This is just ridiculous. He seriously wouldn’t still have a career if it weren’t for his friends. Bless Sandler’s soul for what he has done for Rob Schneider, but damn him for what he has done to countless hours of my life.
