DVDs I Bought This Week!

A wise man once said “It’s not just about seeing Star Wars two weeks before everyone else. You’ve gotta plow through crap like Marie Antoinette and Catwoman as well.” I have the fortune of being able to see all of the films that I want, and find out that they are only worth one viewing (or less) before I would willingly pay for the DVD…and subsequently end up hating myself later. But for every The Whoopee Boys there has to be an Indiana Jones, and because of the great films I am able to put myself further in debt every week.

Batman – Gotham Knight

Director: Yasuhiro Aoki, Futoshi Higashide, Toshiyuki Kubooka, Hiroshi Morioka, Shoujirou Nishimi

Rated: Rated PG-13 for stylized violence, including some bloody images.

Synopsis: Batman, kicking animated ass straight to DVD.

Why Buy It?: This is undoubtedly the summer of Batman. Seriously, if I weren’t a Batman fan this would be an absolutely horrendous week for DVD’s. How sad/awesome is it that the DVD I am most excited to buy is a straight to DVD animated film? So the moral of the story would be, either Batman – Gotham Knight is just that good, or this is just that bad of a week. On one final note, this movie is damn good.

Formats: Standard DVD, Bluray

Batman Begins (Limited Edition Gift Set)

Director: Christopher Nolan

Cast: Christian Bale, Katie Holmes, Michael Cane, Cillian Murphy, Morgan Freeman

Synopsis: That movie before The Dark Knight

Why Buy It?: So I am buying another Batman movie, over the other releases of the week. It is a pretty easy sell to say that Batman Begins is a better movie than all the other releases, but is it worth buying again? Yes…This is a new edition that comes with a usb drive filled with marketing assets, and also comes with postcards, a lenticular and even a free ticket for the new movie. It is either this or Stop-Loss, and that is a pretty easy compromise.

Formats: Standard DVD, Bluray

The Ruins

Director: Carter Smith

Cast: Jonathan Tucker, Jena Malone, Laura Ramsey, Shawn Ashmore

Rated: Rated R for strong violence and gruesome images, language, some sexuality and nudity.

Synopsis: The most horrific vacation ever, a trip to Mexico

Why Rent It?: I love horror films, especially when they are done well. It has seemed that the genre is dying a very slow death, but occasionally we can find a film that is a cut above the rest. With some innovated tricks The Ruins doesn’t throw those stock cliches in your face, it just scares you. Cool movie, but only worth buying for real horror fans.

Formats: Standard DVD, Bluray

The Man with X-Ray Eyes

Director: Roger Corman

Cast: Ray Milland, Don Rickles

Synopsis: A deviant’s dream come true

Why Rent It?: I really love Roger Corman classics. X, otherwise known as The Man with X-Ray Eyes, is one of the coolest movies I have ever seen. I remember seeing it as a kid, and I was so afraid that I wouldn’t be able to sleep because I would see through my eyelids. This movie is messed up, and a campy horror classic that is worth checking out.

Formats: Standard DVD

The Ruins

Director: Kimberly Pierce

Cast: Ryan Phillippe, Channing Tatum

Rated: Rated PG-13 for sequences of intense violence and action, some disturbing images and brief strong language.

Synopsis: Texas + Fake Accents + Army = Frustration

Why Avoid It?: I really hated this film even though I really respect Kimberly Pierce. I was at the world premier and Pierce spoke about her inspiration for the film. She called Stop-Loss a tribute to the troops. Considering her own brother is a soldier in Iraq, why would she make them all look like incompetent, drunk messes of human beings? The accents are really annoying too.

Formats: Standard DVD, Bluray

Superhero Movie

Director: Craig Mazin

Cast: Drake Bell, Sara Paxton

Rated: Rated PG-13 for crude and sexual content, comic violence, drug references and language.

Synopsis: The newest spoof movie to make me want to bathe with a toaster.

Why Avoid It?: Because if you watch this film, it has been predicted that baby seals will in fact start clubbing infants all over the world. You might lose brain cells. You will not save money on your car insurance. The grass won’t be greener. George Bush will be elected to a third term in office. Don’t even think about it…

Formats: Standard DVD
