DVDs I Bought This Week!

A wise man once said “It’s not just about seeing Star Wars two weeks before everyone else. You’ve gotta plow through crap like Marie Antoinette and Catwoman as well.” I have the fortune of being able to see all of the films that I want, and find out that they are only worth one viewing (or less) before I would willingly pay for the DVD…and subsequently end up hating myself later. But for every The Whoopee Boys there has to be an Indiana Jones, and because of the great films I am able to put myself further in debt every week.

Pineapple Express

The Pitch: A stoner/buddy cop movie. What could be better?

Why Buy It?: I really liked this one when I saw it. I have to say though, it might have been because I was hanging out with Seth Rogen just before seeing it, and then hung out with Judd Apatow, Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg in the lobby right before the film. So did I like this one a bit more than I should have? Yes, probably. I loved this movie. This is one of the films that I will gladly hand over my money for, knowing that I will be hosting multiple viewings with friends.

Blu-ray Available: Yes

The Wackness

The Pitch: A movie about relationships that are as dysfunctional as they can possibly be.

Why Buy It?: I made the effort to see this at SXSW last year, and it was totally worth it. This was one of my favorite movies of the year. It’s not the most conventional of films, but very funny and original. In case you don’t know anything about it, it’s a coming of age story about a boy who sells pot so he can go to college…and gives pot to his psychologist as a form of payment. Buy it and enjoy it, enough said.

Secret Diary of a Callgirl

The Pitch: Mild mannered girl by day, high profile escort by night. The story of my life.

Why Buy It?: Have you ever seen Billie Piper? Now, have you ever seen Billie Piper naked? If you answered no to either of those questions, then that is why you should buy this. All obvious answers aside, this is a really good show and worth checking out. I’m sure I don’t have to coax any “Dr. Who” fans on the merits of Billie Piper.

Blu-ray Available: No

Eden Lake

The Pitch: Another take on the horror/thriller genre from the Britts.

Why Rent It?: It would seem that some great thrillers are ready to come from the UK. Donkey Punch, which made a big impression at Sundance, was a great film in my humble opinion. This one isn’t your average hack and slash, more of a methodical thriller. Worth checking out, but the ending makes it only worth watching once for me.

Blu-ray Available: No

Ping Pong Playa

The Pitch: Another comedy with really little balls.

Why Rent It?: This is one of those movies that I really regretted that I never had a chance to check out. Peter at Slashfilm gave this one a pretty good review at TIFF, and I have been wanting to see it ever since. Who knows, I might end up buying it sometime. For now though, I’m just going to check it out.

Blu-ray Available: Yes

Babylon A.D.

The Pitch: A futuristic mercenary flick starring Vin Diesel, that isn’t Pitch Black.

Why Rent It?: I have always been a sucker for good action flicks, even ones with no plot and gratuitous violence. So would I pass up on seeing a Vin Diesel action flick? Nope. I’ll check this one out. However, I won’t lie. I’m not very confident on how this one will turn out.

Blu-ray Available: Yes

Bangkok Dangerous

Synopsis: Nicolas Cage’s battling with rogue hairpieces in Bangkok.

Why Avoid It?: What does Nicolas Cage have going for him anymore? Not much, to be honest. Aside from the two National Treasure flicks, he has only been the owner of some tragedies of late. I used to like the guy, but when he decided he wanted to be a badass, I didn’t buy it. So much for reading scripts, my little brother could have written a better film than this one.

Blu-ray Available: Yes

Righteous Kill

Synopsis: Two aging stars, and not much else.

Why Avoid It?: I guessed the twist maybe 30 minutes into this one, and then slept. Not on purpose, I rarely fall asleep with movies. This was just way overdone. Stay away unless you are a huge DeNiro or Pacino fan. Scratch that, just stay away. You will thank me for it.

Blu-ray Available: Yes

Disaster Movie

Synopsis: The title should suffice.

Why Avoid It?:This one should be banned from theaters. People have said that you can find something to like about any movie. That there is a redeeming factor in the acting, directing or screenwriting. There is no redeeming factor for this film. It’s just garbage. Also, on a side note…I despise Kim Kardashian. Just her being in this one makes me want to stay away.

Blu-ray Available: Yes
