Comic-Con 2012: The Coolest Things We Found on Preview Night

Well friends, San Diego Comic-Con is officially almost here. For all intents and purposes, the Con kicked off tonight with Preview Night, a once upon a time small gathering of people walking around the floor which has blossomed into SDCC Day 0 with tens of thousands of people storming the floor in search of collectibles, exclusives, and nerdy babes.

I braved the floor to get a taste of what was being offered and this year seems a little bit subdued compared to years past. Films like Total Recall really busted their cherries last year, which takes some of the cool factor off of what they brought to the Con this year – basically another nifty car and some badass looking cops.

What would it have been like for the newbie though? Glad you asked!

Upon entering the world of San Diego Comic-Con, you are entrusted these tools:

  • Comic Con Badge
  • Giant Comic Con Bag
  • Collectible Souvenir Book
  • Events Guide

Walking through the welcoming doors of the floor, muscling your way past like-minded individuals, you emerge onto a massive floor. It’s big. If you’ve come through the center, you’re bombarded with the big brands, from Fox to Sony to Warner Bros, Marvel, DC, and the massive toy company spreads of Hasbro and Mattel. Far to the left you’ll find artists and far to the right, the sparsely visited comics area.

After a few hours on the floor, here’s what stuck out to me as the coolest stuff of the day:

The Hobbit

I stumbled in to the WETA world of The Hobbit and was met with Gandalf looming high overhead and a wall full of prop weapons, revealing some of the kick-ass stuff we’re likely to see in the movie. Most impressive of all was the gigantic and looming trolls. Fans of the book will know exactly what part of the story these three bad dudes are from.

Hasbro Still Believes in GI Joe: Retaliation

Unfortunately none of us will be seeing that movie until 2013, but that didn’t stop Hasbro from getting us pumped up. On display was Snake-Eye’s motorcycle, which was alright, but the ultimate awesome: Cobra Commander’s helmet! I’m so glad the Rise of Cobra look has been replaced with the traditional mirrored helmet!

Lego Hulk!

While kids lined up to take pictures with the Incredible Lego Hulk, all I could think about was how awesome it would be to Smash him.

The Walking Dead Collector’s Set

At least, that’s what I’m assuming this awesome zombie head is. You crack open his skull (with a screwdriver!) to reveal the discs within! Awesome. Also on display in the Starz! area was a piranha from Piranha 3DD. Neato.

Stay tuned for more awesome stuff to come! And news! I’m sure there will be news!
