Wonder Con 2012

Fans in attendance who braved the Ballroom Line were treated to the first footage anyone anywhere has seen of Rian Johnson‘s (Brick) newest film, Looper. Up ’til now, all we’ve really heard about the project is that it’s a movie that somehow blends time-travel and assassins. How could it go wrong? While I’m sure there are millions of ways for that idea to go wrong, what we witnessed seems to suggest that none of those things actually went wrong. I’ll break down the footage for you, and it could be considered kind of spoilery I guess, though the teaser trailer will be online in a few weeks. We’ve also got pictures of Joseph Gordon-Levitt as he appears in Looper!

The Losers is a bout a ragtag group of guns for hire who are forced to go on a dangerous mission to clear their name, or avenge a wrongdoing, or save some innocent villagers… it’s one of those, I’m sure of it.

If there were a ranking of upcoming remakes listing the movies in order of necessity, this month’s redo of A Nightmare On Elm Street would sit squarely in the middle of the bunch. Now Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes production shingle is set to release their update, and WB brought some of the cast and crew to WonderCon to tell us why we should care.

Lee Unkrich

I’m far from a Pixar fanboy, and in fact my position as resident cynic here at FSR has usually found me arguing against the perceived perfection of the critically acclaimed animation studio. And yet Disney’s panel for Pixar’s upcoming Toy Story 3 was one of my favorites of the convention. The reason why can be summed up in two words… John Ratzenberger.

I’d be lying if I said I had previously been looking forward to this summer’s Nicolas Cage flick, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Early teasers haven’t done much to dampen my disinterest, but a couple of new scenes from the movie may have succeeded where those teasers failed.

Jake Gyllenhaal at Wondercon

Disney brought panels for three upcoming movies to WonderCon this year, and Jerry Bruckheimer is attached to two of them. (Come to think of it, so is Alfred Molina… but only one of those men was here live onstage.) Two of the films are summer tent-pole hopefuls, and the third is already part of a very successful franchise. And all three feature massive amounts of CGI animation. Surprise!

Wondercon: Doctor Who

WonderCon 2010 hits San Francisco this weekend, and once again I’ll be there soaking in the movie previews, hot cosplay ladies, and eclectic merchant booths. And unlike last year I’m determined to enjoy it all goddammit.

Iron Man 2 Black WIdow Poster

This might just make up for those last few lackluster posters from the marketeers behind Iron Man 2. If you’re headed to WonderCon this weekend in San Francisco, you might want to see about heading to Booth #242 very early, as they will be handing out a nice little poster featuring Black Widow.
