Free Stuff

Of course you do. We’ve talked quite a bit about Stephen Elliot’s About Cherry here on the site, and now all our lovely Gotham-based readers have the chance to actually go see the film for free tonight in the Big Apple (we know no one calls it that, but About Cherry is about being starry-eyed, and damn if we aren’t too). About Cherry will screen tonight, Tuesday, September 18th, at 7:30PM at the IFC Center, thanks to IFC Midnight and Fleshbot, and you can go.

We’ve featured Hector Pahaut‘s work on the site before, but this is the first time ever that anyone in the world will be able to win one of his posters. The poster in question, which gets bigger if you click it, is in front of your eyeballs right now – a violently geometric take on Breaking Bad. So how do you win? Simple. Tell us what secret ingredient you’d add to your meth in the comments section, and we’ll choose one (1) winner at random to receive a 23 x 12.5 in. (58.5 x 32 cm) print. Entries will be accepted through Friday (9/21). Good luck to all who knock.

Today, September 7, marks the release of Raiders of the Lost Ark back into theaters in the IMAX format for an exclusive one-week run. Fully restored and projected as big as Iehova intended. When the stars align and both Neil Miller and Rob Hunter agree that a stoner comedy transcends the genre and manages to deliver laughs rather than just jokes about being high (and potentially hungry), you know you’ve got a special film that’s a toke above the average drug comedy. In High School, valedictorian Henry Burke blazes for the first time only to be faced with the introduction of mandatory drug tests the very next day. Timing is everything, right? Putting that big brain aside for a minute, he lets his stoner buddy come up with what is perhaps the most illegal plan one could do – get the entire school high. Hey, if everyone fails the drug test, something is wrong with the test, right? If you’re a fan of movies, laughing, eating, brownies, or the appropriate medical use of marijuana, how about you do yourself a favor and enter to win a copy of this flick on Blu-ray?

Jaws

Just when you thought it was safe to jump back into our comments section, a surprise guest showed up. He’s big, white and has a taste for blood. Yes, it’s Shark Week around the world and Universal has appropriately timed the release of Jaws on Blu-ray with the celebration of all the reasons why I didn’t like swimming in the deep end of the pool as a teenager adult child. Here at FSR, we’re having a celebration of our own. To our beloved readers, those of you who survive the summer, we would like to present an excellent Jaws-themed giveaway. So Jaws-themed that we’re going to give you the Spielbergian terror on Blu-ray and a sweet bottle opener that will allow you to enjoy our Jaws drinking game with your favorite brew (or soda). All you have to do is play our little game…

This contest is now closed. Thank you for entering! Laika Entertainment returns to screens with their first new film since their Academy Award-nominated Coraline with Sam Fell and Chris Butler‘s ParaNorman, a charming as all get-out 3D stop-motion comedy thriller about a boy with some very special (and very weird) capabilities. Young Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee) doesn’t have a friend in the world – a living friend that is – because he can talk to ghosts and witches and, as it turns out, zombies. Those skills might not fly in the American middle school, but they certainly come in handy when his town (already saddled with a witch-hunting past) is overrun by the brain-eaters. To get you ready to battle whatever monsters who might wander into your town, we’re giving away one (1) prize packs from ParaNorman to one (that is 1) lucky winner. The grand prize pack includes: a $25 Visa gift card, a t-shirt, a keychain, a notebook, a pair of slippers (like Norman’s own), a toothbrush (also just like Norman’s!), and a backpack. To win one (1) prize pack from Sam Fell and Chris Butler’s ParaNorman, all you have to do is jump down into the comments section and let us know what your favorite old school horror film is (Norman is a big fan of classic thrillers and chillers). Please also provide your email address in your comment. This contest is only open to U.S. residents. The contest will close on Wednesday, August 15th, at […]

Joseph Kahn‘s new movie Detention is essentially The Breakfast Club meets Prom Night meets the kitchen sink. A group of diverse high-schoolers are stalked by a serial killer named Cinderhella, and the terror culminates during their collective stay in after school detention. The film is far from a straight forward thriller though as Kahn plays with the medium in different ways and fills the story with crazy distractions like time travel, homages to The Fly, grizzly bears and more. It’s pretty nuts. Detention was released earlier this week, and if you haven’t picked it up yet we have some good news. We’re giving away a copy of the film on Blu-ray and another on DVD. And because we care how you look in public we’re also throwing in a Detention t-shirt, beanie and baseball cap (pics below). Keep reading to see how you can win!

Rachel Weisz is one spectacularly talented actress. She doesn’t get the award accolades of Meryl Streep, but she’s as good. She doesn’t get the hubba-hubba comments of Jessica Biel, but she’s as beautiful. And she doesn’t get the high profile, big budget blockbuster roles of Kristen Stewart, but she’s, well, she’s older. Her latest film is sumptuous period drama, The Deep Blue Sea, that finds her playing a young wife trapped in an unexciting marriage to an esteemed judge. A chance meeting with a RAF pilot (Tom Hiddleston) leads to a tumultuous affair that may very well be the end of her. Music Box Films released the film on Blu-ray/DVD earlier this week, and in addition to the highly acclaimed film itself the disc includes commentary from director Terence Davies, two special ‘making-of’ features and interviews with Weisz and Hiddleston. Keep reading to see how you can win a copy of The Deep Blue Sea on Blu-ray.

Editor’s note: This contest is now closed. Thank you for participating! You can’t choose your family. You can certainly choose to get away from them, but that doesn’t change who they are and that you’re truly stuck with them forever. In Nancy Savoca’s Union Square, Jenny (Tammy Blanchard) thinks she’s escaped her nutty family (including her sister Lucy and their mom, played by Patti LuPone) after years of estrangement, but when flighty Lucy (Mira Sorvino) suddenly shows up at Jenny’s apartment with some really unexpected news, that all changes. To remind you that, hey, everyone’s family is nuts, we’re giving away one (1) signed poster from Union Square. The standard one-sheet poster has been signed by Mira Sorvino, Tammy Blanchard and director Nancy Savoca. To win one (1) signed poster from Nancy Savoca’s Union Square, all you have to do is jump down into the comments section and let us know the title of your favorite film about dysfunctional families (we’ll leave it to you and your tastes to pick “fun” one). Please also provide your email address in your comment. This contest is only open to U.S. residents. The contest will close on Friday, July 13th, at 8:00PM PST. The winner will be chosen at random to receive one signed Union Square poster as described above. After the break, check out a look at the poster (this version is unsigned) and the film’s official trailer.

Chuck Norris is the reason Waldo is hiding. Chuck Norris does not sleep. He waits. There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live. Chuck Norris is also coming to Blu-ray in a big way thanks to Twentieth Century Fox and MGM. His starring roles have been inexplicably unavailable in high definition until now (unless you count Forest Warrior, which no one should), but this summer sees the debut of five of his classic action titles. Delta Force and Missing In Action 1 & 2 all hit Blu-ray last month, and two more arrive on July 17th. Code of Silence and Lone Wolf McQuade are two of his best from the mid-eighties, and they can be yours if you play your cards right. The former is a fantastic Chicago-set action film with Chuck as a detective forced to fight corruption with nothing but his fists, his attitude and his bitching robot, Prowler. The latter sees him trying on his Texas Ranger shoes as he goes toe to toe with TV’s original Asian, David Carradine. Keep reading to see how you can win these two Chuck Norris classics on Blu-ray.

This contest is now closed. Thank you for entering! Armageddon films have been done, pardon me, to death. Packed with big emotions and big explosions, we’re rarely granted a fresh take on a bloated genre, by Lorene Scafaria‘s Seeking a Friend for the End of the World takes all that worldwide drama to a much smaller level – to the drama between two people at the end of the world. Starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley, the film focuses on the pair of Dodge and Penny as they try to navigate their way through a world that’s run out of time. It’s sweet and funny and more than a little sad, and it’s the perfect new entry into its genre. To celebrate the opening of the film, we’re giving away two very fun prize packs from the film, both crammed with stuff you might need during Armageddon (lip balm, of course!) and stuff you just might want (glow sticks, obviously). To get you prepped for the end of the world, we’re giving away two (2) different prize packs from Seeking a Friend for the End of the World to two (that is 2) lucky winners. The grand prize pack includes: a $50 Fandango gift card, the film’s official soundtrack on CD, a t-shirt, a tote bag, lip balm, a shot glass, a glow stick and bracelet, and a key chain. The additional prize pack includes: the film’s official soundtrack on CD, a t-shirt, a tote bag, lip balm, a shot glass, […]

This contest is now closed. Thank you for entering! Is there anything better than Nicolas Cage playing an unhinged dude who will stop at nothing to achieve personal justice? In Roger Donaldson‘s Seeking Justice, Cage does just that after his wife (January Jones) is brutally attacked and he’s offered support by Guy Pearce, a mysterious stranger with his own aims and secrets. As you can likely expect, they’re not selfless aims and they’re not fluffy secrets. With Seeking Justice hitting DVD and Blu-ray next week, we’re excited to offer a very special Blu-ray prize pack filled with films that all tap right into the themes of the Cage-starrer. Dirty cops. Dirty deeds. All on your own television. This prize pack includes Blu-rays of The Son of No One, Brooklyn’s Finest, Texas Killing Fields, Righteous Kill, and Seeking Justice. That’s quite a bit of crooked law enforcement to deal with all at once. To win the prize pack, all you have to do is jump down into the comments section and let us know what your favorite film is that centers on dirty cops and crooked deeds (no worries, it doesn’t have to be one in this prize pack). Please also provide your email address in your comment so we can contact you if you win. This contest is only open to U.S. residents. The contest will close Wednesday, June 20th at 10AM EST/1PM PST. Ryan Hartwig and a shotgun in The Aggression Scale

Remember the first time you watched Home Alone? You probably enjoyed it quite a bit, but still, somewhere deep in the back of your head, you knew it was missing something. That something was most likely extreme violence, bloody murder and a hot older sister. Lucky for you director Steven Miller and writer Ben Powell thought the very same thing. Their new film, The Aggression Scale, is about a group of thugs who invade a family’s home in search of money and kicks but find an emotionally disturbed boy instead. Owen is prone to violence, knowledgeable in the art of weapon-making and booby traps and very, very angry. He would eat Kevin McCallister for breakfast. The always wonderful Ray Wise stars as the mobster behind it all, and Dana Ashbrook joins him as his right-hand man and lead enforcer. That’s right…it’s a mini Twin Peaks reunion! Also along for the ride is Derek Mears who should be recognizable to all as the star of Kickpuncher. Anchor Bay is releasing the movie on May 29th, and they’re giving away two copies of the Blu-ray to help spread the home invasion fun. Keep reading to see how you can win.

This contest is now closed. All winners will be emailed. Thank you for participating! For fans of Stephenie Meyer‘s “The Twilight Saga” and its cinematic counterparts, saying goodbye to the series when the final film, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 this fall will be tough stuff. Fortunately, Meyer already has a brand new film based on one of her books ready to go, and it’s one that will appeal to both fans of Twilight and those who have never gotten the teen vampire love story craze. Meyer’s “The Host” is a more adult book that explores similar themes to those addressed in “The Twilight Saga,” but with a much more mature spin. Also, there are aliens (a lot of aliens). And a well-sketched post-apocalyptic Earth for them to populate. The film is officially described as “an enchanting and fateful story about the survival of love and the human spirit in a time of war. Our world is invaded by an unseen enemy, humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over, while their bodies remain intact. Most of humanity has succumbed.” The film will star Saoirse Ronan, Diane Kruger, Max Irons, Frances Fisher, William Hurt, Jake Abel, and many more. The Host has been written by Meyer, along with director Andrew Niccol (who knows a thing about dystopian futures, having written and directed Gattaca and In Time and written The Truman Show). To get you ready for The Host the movie, we’re giving away five (5) copies of “The […]

This contest is now closed. Winners will be emailed ASAP. Thank you for entering! Do you miss summer camp? Do you miss young love? Do you miss Wes Anderson? Lucky for you, the writer/director is returning to theaters with a little something called Moonrise Kingdom, a film that should sate your desire for all those things (and more!). Set in the summer of 1965, the film chronicles the the forbidden love of a pair of twelve-year-olds who run away together from their island summer camp, leaving the adults around them to scramble to find them, a mission that isn’t helped by a big storm brewing just off-shore and threatening all of their safety. To get you ready to camp out with Moonrise Kingdom, we’re giving away two (2) prize packs from the film to two (that is 2) lucky winners. The prize packs include: a t-shirt, patches (set of two), cooler, canteen, and one copy of the Original Soundtrack on CD. To win one (1) prize pack from Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom, all you have to do is jump down into the comments section and let us know your favorite line from any Wes Anderson movie. Have some fun with it, guy. Please also provide your email address in your comment. This contest is only open to U.S. residents. The contest will close Saturday, May 26th, at 8:00PM PST. Later this week, IFC Midnight is releasing Entrance, a film by Dallas Hallam and Patrick Horvath, a tricky little indie that comes with a metric ton of thrills and chills, wrapped up in a very surprising package. Our own Cole Abaius posted its goose bump-inducing trailer last week, and if it’s been haunting your dreams and you happen to live in LA, we’ve got a surprise for you! We’re giving away two tickets to see Entrance at the Downtown Independent theater this Friday, May 18th at 8PM. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with directors Hallam and Horvath, as moderated by filmmaker Ti West. Having seen the film at last year’s LAFF (and weirdly enough, having seen it at the Downtown), I can vouch for its ability to lure audiences in, lull them gently, before nailing their guts and minds to the back wall of the theater. It’s fun! To win the tickets, which includes 2 tickets to Entrance at the Downtown Independent theater, followed by a Q&A with directors Dallas Hallam and Patrick Horvath moderated by filmmaker Ti West, all you have to do is jump down into the comments section and let us know what your favorite independent theater is in Los Angeles (this isn’t a trick! you don’t have to say the Downtown! but, man, what a great theater!). Filmed on location around Los Angeles, Entrance is both a very LA production and a very indie one, so it’s a pretty perfect confluence of interests. […]

Word on the street is that Oren Moverman‘s Rampart is pretty damned good. It stars Woody Harrelson as an LAPD cop in the wake of the Rampart scandal in the 1990s. It also features Ice Cube, who doesn’t at all still represent the LA of the early 1990s. The thing is, even if the movie were terrible, this poster would still be awesome. It looks absolutely stunning, and we’re giving one away. Plus, one (1) lucky winner will get a Harrelson-signed script to go with their new wall art. How do you enter? Excellent rhetorical question! This contest is now closed. All winners will be receiving an email. Thanks! In filmmaker Lee Kirk‘s directorial debut, The Giant Mechanical Man, a love story unfolds between two directionless thirtysomethings whose unhappy lives are only exacerbated by their professional failures. Jenna Fischer‘s Janice has just taken on yet another dead-end job selling concessions at a local zoo, where Tim (Chris Messina) has also recently had to take a job as a janitor, seeing as how his main job (being that titular “giant mechanical man” as part of a street performance) doesn’t pay the bills. The film recently premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, and we’re pleased to present an exclusive clip from the film here on FSR. In this scene, the two cross paths on the job and begin to form a bond. In celebration of The Giant Mechanical Man‘s Tribeca premiere and subsequent theatrical release, we are also giving away five (5) signed posters from the film. To win one (1) signed poster, all you have to do is jump down into the comments section and let us know about the worst job you’ve ever had. Please also provide your email address in your comment so that we can email winners. This contest is only open to U.S. residents. The contest will close Sunday, April 29th, at 9:00PM EST. The winners will be chosen at random from those who reply in the comment section, and they will receive a signed poster from The Giant Mechanical Man, as described […]

Ti West’s The Innkeepers was a hell of horror film – trenchant atmosphere, frightening moments and an antique feeling matched with the modern boredom of minimum wage.
